The steam engine - fire and water !

The heart of a genuine steamship, its beating centre, is the STEAM ENGINE. The steam engine was the beginning of the first Industrial Revolution. The Finns owe their well-being to the steam engine - early Finnish wood processing industry and export relied on steam power. Thus it is only reasonable that at least one steam engine has been preserved and put in active service, sailing on the Finnish seas in its authentic environment, in an old steamer.

The steam engine is worked by fire and boiling water. Because the engine is uncovered and the speed is moderate, its working is visible and easy to observe. The steamship glides noiselessly on the sea. The engine works steadily, beating like the heart of that living creature called the steamer. The scent of steam has its own particular aroma. Many children visiting the engine room have told me that it smells good!

There are only a few steamers in active service in the world; in Finland there are a few, and in our sea territories, there is only this one.
